The Group Life Specialists

Having Life insurance provides peace of mind that loved ones will be taken care of in the event of a death. Many individuals today look to obtain this coverage through their workplace because of group discounts and other benefits. ISU-The Olson Duncan Agency can enhance your employee benefits plan with Group Life Insurance, a key component for any comprehensive financial plan.

How Group Life Insurance Works

A Group Life plan, typically written as a Term policy, allows you as an employer to buy a master policy and then issue certificates of participation in the plan. It provides a large amount of insurance for a set period in a worker’s life and is typically designed to provide benefits for dependents in the event of the insured’s premature death. A Whole Life, or Permanent Life, insurance policy is more expensive, but it lasts longer and builds cash value over the course of its existence—value that the employee can borrow against or use in other ways.

Benefits of Group Life Insurance

With Group Life as part of your employee benefits, you will:

  • Enhance company retention and recruiting, making your firm more attractive to employees.
  • Help provide peace of mind to employees. The knowledge that employee loved ones will receive an insurance benefit in the worst-case scenario provides comfort, and can help positively impact employee morale.
  • Offer a more affordable policy. Employers typically get good group rates for Life insurance, making this a low-cost benefit even if the employer pays the full premium. If the employer opts to sponsor the coverage but have the employee pay the premium, it usually results in a situation in which the employee can get Life insurance coverage for a much smaller premium than he or she could individually.
  • Tax benefits. The cost of the premium for the first $50,000 of Life insurance coverage is not taxable income even if it is covered by the employer on behalf of the employee. (This is applicable as long as the benefit meets nondiscrimination requirements.)
  • Ease of access. Group Life insurance typically policies don’t require individuals to have physical exams, thus making it simpler for your employees to get coverage.
